René Descartes

A French philosopher and mathematician, father of modern philosophy and creator of analytic geometry, Descartes formulated methodic doubt and mind-body dualism ("I think, therefore I am"). He lived in the tolerant Dutch Republic, avoiding conflict with the Church after Galileo.
